Job Title: Information Technology Specialist I
Department: Information Technology (IT)
Reports to: Director of IT
Classification: Full time; Non-Exempt
DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of IT, the IT Specialist I serves as a Tier 1 technician focusing on foundational desktop support. This role involves fielding basic support requests, troubleshooting end-user hardware and software issues, and providing overall assistance to the entire IT department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serve as the primary point of contact for desktop support requests (Tier 1).
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot operating systems (Windows/macOS) and software applications.
- Perform hardware repairs and maintenance on PCs, laptops, printers, and other peripherals.
- Respond promptly to staff and faculty technical needs, ensuring high levels of customer service.
- Assist with the setup and operation of multi-media/AV equipment for classrooms.
- Provide basic user training on common software and hardware functions.
- Perform basic user account administration (password resets, group assignments) in Google Workspace and Microsoft admin consoles.
- Execute physical tasks such as network cabling, workstation moves, and peripheral setups.
- Document support activities and maintain accurate inventory records.
- All other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
ABILITY TO
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge of computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
- Effectively troubleshoot common desktop and application issues.
- Provide clear and patient technical assistance to non-technical users.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with colleagues and students.
- Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Follow established IT policies and administrative procedures.
EDUCATION
- Preferred: Associate degree (A.S.) in computer science or equivalent OR one year of related experience and/or training OR equivalent combination of education and experience
- Preferred Certifications: CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Basic knowledge of Windows Active Directory and Google/Microsoft admin consoles.
- Knowledge of network cabling standards and VoIP phone systems.
- Experience with laptop, desktop, PC repair and printer maintenance.
- Familiarity with AV systems (TVs, projectors) and other classroom technologies.
- Comfortable with using basic hand tools (drills, screwdrivers).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s function require the following physical demands: walk, stand, sit, lift, carry, occasionally lifting items above forty pounds. Physical actions may include pulling, cabling, bending at the waist, and reaching up to retrieve equipment. The job is performed regularly inside campus locations which are subject to moderate to loud environmental noise. Occasionally, may work inside closed spaces such as attics or ceilings, or heights such as roofs. The position takes place in a school and is subject to varied weather conditions.
