Description of Work

The System Administrator I position provides technical and administrative support for NCDHHS Microsoft Windows Server systems, the virtual server environment, and associated applications, delivering advanced server support across divisions. The role collaborates with server engineers, specialists, administrators, and technicians to design, implement, and sustain technical solutions aligned with business processes and application requirements. Work includes troubleshooting, installation, upgrading, maintenance, performance tuning, capacity monitoring, and coordinating software changes to minimize user impact. The position also supports security baselines, high‑availability, and disaster recovery requirements for supported business units within the Department.


Key Duties Include:
- Administer Windows Server roles and services (DNS, DHCP, IIS, Group Policy, File/Print) to ensure stable, secure, and standardized server operations.

- Manage Active Directory by provisioning users, maintaining OU structure, configuring password policies, creating domain trusts, and enforcing Group Policy Objects (GPOs).

- Monitor and maintain virtualization clusters, including VM provisioning, resource allocation, failover configuration, and snapshot management.

- Design and implement technical solutions in partnership with server engineers and administrators, aligning configurations with application requirements and business processes.

- Troubleshoot system issues; install, upgrade, tailor, and maintain operating systems, communications/network software, and layered products.

- Perform performance tuning and capacity planning; monitor hardware and system metrics to optimize availability and reliability.

- Coordinate and test software changes from upgrades to reduce downtime and user impact across environments.

- Implement security baselines via GPOs and other configuration controls to standardize workstation and server settings.

- Execute backup and recovery strategies using Rubrik appliances; validate restore procedures to meet disaster recovery requirements.

- Document administrative processes, configuration changes, and test results; communicate status and issues to stakeholders and support teams.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range: $75,818.00 - $113,727.00

 

Recruitment Range: $75,818.00 - $83,000.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: 

  • Proficiency administering Windows Server environments, including hands‑on experience managing DNS, DHCP, IIS, File/Print services, and Group Policy configurations in enterprise environments.

  • Demonstrated experience managing Active Directory operations, including user provisioning, OU structure maintenance, group policy creation, password policy configuration, and domain trust administration.

  • Advanced skill maintaining virtualization clusters by performing VM provisioning, resource allocation, failover configuration, and snapshot management to support high‑availability requirements.

  • Proven success implementing backup and recovery plans using Rubrik appliances, including performing and validating restores to meet disaster recovery and business continuity standards.

  • Professional experience designing, testing, and deploying server software changes, including coordinating upgrades and tailoring systems to minimize user impact while ensuring operational stability.
