Job Summary A System Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of computer systems, networks, and servers within an organization. They play a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of IT infrastructure and providing technical support to users. Job Duties and Responsibilities System Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Install, configure, and maintain operating systems, applications, and system software. Monitor system performance, identify issues, and perform troubleshooting to resolve problems promptly. Ensure system security by implementing appropriate access controls, firewalls, and security measures. Conduct regular system backups and implement disaster recovery plans. Manage software and hardware updates, patches, and upgrades. Network Administration: Set up and maintain computer networks, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and wireless networks. Configure network devices such as routers, switches, and firewalls. Monitor network traffic, analyze network performance, and optimize network resources. Troubleshoot network connectivity issues and resolve network-related problems. Implement network security measures and ensure data protection. User Support and Training: Provide technical support to end-users by diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, and network issues. Respond to user inquiries, assess their needs, and offer appropriate solutions. Train users in system and software usage, ensuring they understand best practices and security guidelines. Create and maintain user accounts, permissions, and access controls. Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system configurations, user guides, and standard operating procedures. System Monitoring and Performance Optimization: Monitor system and network performance, ensuring availability, reliability, and scalability. Utilize monitoring tools to track system health, resource utilization, and performance metrics. Analyze system logs and generate reports to identify trends, patterns, and potential issues. Implement performance optimization techniques, such as load balancing, caching, and resource allocation. Security and Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant security standards, regulations, and policies. Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and risk assessments. Implement security measures to protect systems from unauthorized access, malware, and data breaches. Stay updated on emerging security threats and technologies and recommend security enhancements. Infrastructure Planning and Deployment: Collaborate with stakeholders to assess and analyze business requirements. Plan and implement infrastructure upgrades, expansions, and migrations. Evaluate and recommend new hardware, software, and technologies to improve system efficiency. Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure necessary equipment and licenses. ​​​Team Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with other IT professionals, such as developers, network engineers, and database administrators, to resolve complex issues and ensure seamless integration. Communicate effectively with team members, management, and end-users to provide status updates, project reports, and technical guidance. Participate in meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills. Other duties as assigned. QualificationsExperience and Education Experience: Previous experience working in a system administration role, or a related IT position is highly desirable. Experience with system administration tasks such as server administration, network management, troubleshooting, and user support. Familiarity with various operating systems, such as Windows, Apple OS. Experience with virtualization technologies, cloud platforms, and storage systems is beneficial. Knowledge of network protocols, security principles, and IT infrastructure is important. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, are desirable. Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is typically preferred by employers. However, equivalent work experience and relevant certifications can sometimes compensate for the lack of a degree. Certifications (Optional): Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate or Microsoft Certified: Windows Server certifications. CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certifications. Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC). VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or similar virtualization certifications. Continued Learning: System administrators should stay updated with the latest technologies, industry trends, and best practices through self-study, attending conferences, participating in training programs, and pursuing relevant certifications. Keeping up to date with security threats and measures is crucial for maintaining system integrity and protecting against cyber threats. Demonstrating a commitment to professional development and continuous learning is highly regarded in the field of system administration. Work Environment/Physical Demands Work is performed in an open office environment that allows for collaboration inside and outside of your department. You must be able to operate standard office equipment (desktop, laptop, printer, scanner, etc.). Must be able to walk short distances and within the factory occasionally to perform job duties when necessary.
