A Glimpse of the Job

The Network Engineer I performs routine network engineering functions.

 

Essential Duties/Tasks

Network Design and Support

  • Assist with network design activities under the guidance of senior network engineers.

  • Help analyze, troubleshoot, track, and repair data communications networks.

  • Establish contacts with vendors for networking support and problem resolution.

  • Consult with clients to define networking requirements.

  • Implement tests used to certify network to required installation design standards.

  • Assist with new technology deployments and integration testing.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Document network engineering designs, plans, maps, methods, and procedures

  • Review the accuracy of documentation of network engineering designs.

  • Document problems and repairs.

  • Produce reports and summaries for management and users including status reports, problem reports, progress summaries, and system utilization reports.

  • Provide input for the planning and budget process.

  • Maintain accurate records of facility technology configurations, event setup checklists, and post-event issue logs using department-designated platforms.

Administrative and Operational Support

  • Participate in training and professional development sessions.

  • Assist other employees in resolving various technical issues.

  • Provide on-call support on nights and weekends as needed.

  • Complete small projects under guidance from senior engineers.

  • Confer with project management and vendors to produce bills of materials.

  • Participate in change management and problem tracking.

  • Ensure all work is accurate and in compliance with departmental or project quality standards.

Facility Technology Support

  • Support the technology infrastructure for Athletics venues and event spaces, including network connectivity, IP camera systems, and display boards, ensuring systems are operational prior to and during events.

  • Perform pre-event technology readiness checks at Kyle Field and other Athletics facilities, including verification of IPTV encoder stability, IPTV system functionality, wireless access point health, and digital signage.

  • Coordinate with event management, broadcast partners, and external vendors to ensure network and AV systems meet production requirements for home events, including broadcast connectivity, POS transaction networks, and credential systems.

  • Assist with the configuration and deployment of event-specific network infrastructure, including SSIDs, VLANs, and temporary connectivity for merchandise, ticketing, and media operations.

  • Support post-event technology assessments and issue documentation, identifying recurring problems and recommending corrective actions to leadership.

  • Assist with the maintenance and monitoring of surveillance and access control systems across Athletics facilities in coordination with security and facilities staff.

Salary: $59,000 annually

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of networking design experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Network deployment and administration experience/knowledge, with hands-on experience managing and supporting complex network environments.

  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations, maintaining sound judgment, and timely decision-making.

  • Demonstrated strong work ethics and commitment to high-quality performance.

  • Proven leadership potential and ability to guide, influence, or mentor others.

  • Open to learning and adaptability, with a demonstrated willingness to embrace new technologies and processes.

  • CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or CCNP

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Knowledge of advanced Information Technology (IT) and the Interface Technology Library (ITIL).

  • Ability to perform intermediate troubleshooting and maintain client relations. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of project management, mentoring, negotiation skills, basic vendor relations, advanced client relations skills, proposal writing, business acumen, persuasive communication, adaptability to change, team leadership skills, and quality assurance methodologies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 40 lbs.

  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and elevated areas.

Other Requirements and Factors:

  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system.

  • This role may require working outside of standard office hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support the demands of technology services and ensure the seamless operation of essential systems.

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures.
