Full job details

Responsible for supporting FPI's large Window Server environment, and working with other System Administrator staff to support the ITM computing infrastructure; administering and supporting core Microsoft and VMware technologies; performing daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups; providing after-hours support for Infrastructure related emergencies as well as occasional weekend maintenance; performing/validating daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary; carrying out special tasks at Management's direction; installing new software releases and system upgrades, and evaluating/resolving software-related problems; installs patches when necessary; interacting with customers and staff at the technical level, as required; performing system backups and recovery; maintaining data files and monitors system configuration to ensure data integrity; and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Handles end to end process of building new servers to departmental standards. This includes determining appropriate hardware specifications, getting quotes from vendors, obtaining purchase orders for equipment, and tracking shipment of product. Coordinates with network team for data center placement of new equipment.
  • Researches and develops documentation for future technology needs. Makes recommendations for capacity planning such as data storage and environmental.
  • Monitors and reviews log files of servers to verify integrity and availability or production systems. Responds to alerts generated from system management agents/traps.
  • Administers and maintains operating system patches for desktop workstations and servers. Delivers updates utilizing enterprise level management system.
  • Participates in technical education activities on/off campus as assigned and independently. Reads technical newsletters/email lists for IT professionals to discover new practical applications. Keeps
  • apprised of latest trends, processes and policies for inclusion to company standards and recommends or implements improvement. Identifies administrative tasks that can be streamlined and recommends new approaches to redundant or repetitive administrative tasks.
  • Verifies and maintains that system backups are being performed routinely as defined by the company’s data return policies.
  •  Provides technical assistance and advice for unresolved issues to other support tiers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in the field, working with Microsoft Technologies and Servers
  • MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) Certification preferred; CSA certificate preferred
  • Knowledge of Windows Server (2008/2012) required; preferred experience administering in a large Windows Server infrastructure; proficiency in software and patch deployments/rollouts 
  • Preferred experience supporting server virtualization technologies (VMWare Server/ESX or Microsoft HyperV/Virtual Server)
  • Strong communication and documentation skills; flexible and able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the System Administration field
  • Positive, self-motivated individual who can complete tasks independently
  • Must be a team player and able to coach junior level administrators
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.
