Network Engineer III provides enterprise network engineering and operational support for DOI/IA network environments, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, VoIP, and security-related infrastructure. This role supports installation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance of network devices and services in a Cisco-based environment. The position also supports project-based work involving upgrades, implementation, testing, documentation, and network improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Support administration of DOI/IA data networks, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, VoIP, and related network services.
- Install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, wireless access points, VPN solutions, and related devices.
- Support firewall and network security technologies, including IDS, IPS, content filtering, RADIUS, TACACS, 802.1X, and VPN solutions.
- Support network interfaces, VLANs, routing protocols, and remote connectivity solutions.
- Monitor network performance, alerts, faults, and outages, and assist with incident response and restoration activities.
- Assist with backups of network infrastructure and device configurations using automated and manual methods.
- Support configuration changes, software updates, firmware updates, and patching activities in accordance with approved procedures.
- Create and maintain network documentation, procedures, work instructions, diagrams, and configuration records.
- Assist with test environments and pilot activities for new network technologies.
- Support ticketing, escalation, and coordination with Tier III/Tier IV support and onsite personnel as required.
- Support project-based tasks involving network upgrades, implementations, testing, optimization, and operational improvement.
- Develop, debug, maintain, and document programs and scripts used to manage network infrastructure, including Python.
- Ensure all network components are fully operational, and warranty and service contracts are current.
- Conduct monthly reviews of network operations, fault conditions, and proposed changes
- Establish automated network management procedures that can rapidly respond to network fault conditions.
- Responsible for moves, add-ons, or changes for telephones at the onsite locations.
- Provide Level 3 and 4 support to network administrators to resolve network-related problems.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- 2+ year degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum entry-level certification from a network vendor, such as CompTIA Network+.
- 2+ years of experience with firewall and network security solutions, including IDS, IPS, content filtering, RADIUS, TACACS, 802.1X, and VPN solutions.
- 2+ years of experience in network design and support in a Cisco networking environment.
- Hands-on experience implementing and administering firewalls, network switches, wireless controllers, and access points.
- Experience with infrastructure design, diagnostic polling, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Background check with the ability to obtain Public Trust
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to troubleshoot network interfaces, VLANs, and routing protocols.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask across multiple assignments and projects.
- Ability to contribute to project planning activities and coordinate with engineers on deployments.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of enterprise network support and administration practices.
- Knowledge of Cisco network environments, switching, routing, wireless, and security devices.
- Knowledge of firewall, VPN, authentication, and network access control technologies.
- Skill in troubleshooting network connectivity, device, and performance issues.
- Skill in preparing network procedures, diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Ability to support multiple operational and project-based tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, support staff, and management.
- Has a willingness to learn new technologies and maintain industry knowledge of emerging technologies and industry best practices.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to contribute to project planning activities, including defining goals within the network and telecom space.
- Identifies resources needed and can coordinate with engineers to accomplish enterprise deployments.
- Capacity to define procedures, work instructions, or other methods for sharing knowledge and achieving consistent results.
